Programme Highlight:
The Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch) is established as an advanced technological platform for effective design and construction of buildings and bridges to promote sustainable infrastructure development in Hong Kong. It also enhances the construction industry's capabilities in delivering structural solutions using high-performance materials.
With China's growing emphasis on high-performance, lightweight, green, and low-carbon steel, the interest in using 690–960 MPa high-strength steel in construction is ever increasing. In respond to this, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tsinghua University have jointly developed a Group Standard entitled “Design of Steel Structures Using 690 to 960 MPa High Strength Steel” for the China Steel Construction Society (CSCS), i.e. "CSCS Group Standard". This document supports high quality development of steel construction in Hong Kong and China, and it also facilitates a wide adoption of high strength steel in the Region.
The CSCS Group Standard provides technical guidance in design and construction of high-strength steel structures. It is developed to be consistent to the design philosophy and formulation of European norms EN 1993-1 (Steel Structures) and EN 1994-1 (Composite Structures) for easy adoption among practicing engineers.
This technical visit aims to highlight key features of steel construction technology developed at CNERC for steel and steel-concrete composite structures. Topics include mechanical properties of Chinese high-strength steel, structural behaviour of high-strength steel welded members, welding of high-strength steel, and robotic welding. Technical development of the CSCS Group Standard is also presented to facilitate design and construction of high-strength steel and steel-concrete composite structures.
