17 December 2025 (Wednesday), 17:00-18:00, Seminar via Zoom Meeting

Organized by

HKIE Civil Division and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Programme Highlight

With advancement in stainless steel manufacturing techniques, new types of cost-effective and high-performance stainless steel materials such as lean duplex and ferritic stainless steel have been increasingly used as structural members in construction. In recent years, several carbon steel bridges have been replaced by lean duplex stainless steel materials, which have been proven to be the most cost-effective solution due to the significant saving in maintenance. This seminar aims at introducing the latest advancements in construction materials that contribute to sustainable construction through extending service life without maintenance. It will cover the applications of stainless steel in construction and multi-criteria comparison of different types of steel; mechanical properties and structural behaviour under ambient and elevated temperatures; and new design methods in EC3 for key structural stainless steel components.

Speakers
Prof. Yuner Huang is currently an Associate Professor at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received her BEng and PhD degree from Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong in 2009 and 2013, respectively. She is also a member of Institution of Civil Engineers (CEng MICE) and American Society of Mechnical Engineers (M.ASME) as well as Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Prior to joining PolyU, she worked as a Senior Lecturer at School of Engineering in University of Edinburgh for about 10 years. She is an expert in structural behaviour and design, with research focus in light-gauge steel modular construction, climate resilience of buildings and adaptation in vulnerable community, and offshore energy infrastructure. Her research projects have received Covid-19 Engineering Medal and Research Impact Prize from University of Edinburgh. Prof. Huang serves as the Associate Editor for ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, editorial board for Journal of Constructional Steel Research and Thin-Walled Members and Stability and Grant Committee of Royal Society UK.
