Webinar on A research, teaching and education-integrated bridge health monitoring platform

Technical Seminar:
A research, teaching and education-integrated bridge health monitoring platform

Date, time & venue

29 November 2023 (Wednesday), 17:00-18:00, Seminar via Zoom Meeting

Organized by

HKIE Civil Division and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Programme Highlight

This talk will overview a structural health monitoring (SHM) system for a butterfly-shaped arch footbridge at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The project is the product of a multidisciplinary academic collaboration. The SHM system consists of 88 sensors of 13 types to monitor environmental parameters (air temperature, air pressure, humidity, rain, and solar radiation), loads (winds, pedestrians, and structural temperature), and bridge responses (stress/strain, displacement, and acceleration). A research, teaching and education-integrated visualization platform has been developed.

Free of Charge.

Dr. Yong Xia is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Joint Research Centre for Marine Infrastructure, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has conducted condition monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructure for over 20 years, including the 600 m tall Canton Tower, 632 m tall Shanghai Tower, Tsing Ma Bridge, Stonecutters Bridge, and 55 km long Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. He has co-authored two research books, more than 150 journal papers, and seven design standards. Dr. Xia has won national and international awards, including the State Technological Innovation Award, the Chang Jiang Scholar, the Nishino Prize, the HKIE Structural Excellence Award (twice), etc. Dr. Xia is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Structural Engineering, an SCI journal.
