Speaker : Professor Dr. Y M Cheng, retired academic from the H K Polytechnic University.

Speaker’s Profile:
Professor Dr. Y M Cheng graduates from the Dept. of Civil Engineering, HKU in 1981. He has extensive engineering experience in soft, rock and immersed tunnels (MTR and EHC), steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges design and construction, ground treatment, deep excavation in poor soils with different types of retaining wall types, slopes and piles engineering before joining the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Research interest include different numerical methods: finite element, distinct element and meshless methods, plasticity theory, slope stability, pile foundation, field tests, IOT monitoring in construction. Prof. Cheng has published about 200 papers, 11 books based on the research works, and
has serviced in various engineering committees and government departments as advisor and as editors in several international journals. Prof Cheng is rated World’s top 2 % scientist by Stanford University in 2020 and 2022, and has received several best paper awards from engineering journals. Prof. Cheng is ranked 23 in geological and geomatics engineering in China in 2020 according to the Standford rating and is also ranked 59 scholars in Civil Engineering discipline in China in 2022. Currently, he has founded an engineering company Smart Site Ltd., and he has been serving H K Polytechnic University as a professor in Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Discipline.
