Programme Highlight

Ground- and structure-borne vibrations due to construction activities can induce various levels of disruption or interference to surroundings, such as nearby underground utilities, buildings, occupants, and ultraprecision equipment. In many densely populated metropolises, small separation distances from construction sites to vibration-sensitive objects intensify such adverse impact. Although vibration control limits that consider structural damage have long been adopted by the construction industry, these limits are considerably higher than the acceptable vibration criteria for ultraprecision equipment and facilities that may fulfill critical societal functions and are often costlier than buildings. Consequently, recent construction projects near structures with vibration-sensitive equipment in Hong Kong bring an unprecedented challenge to the construction industry. Increasingly stringent vibration limits require not only the prudent selection and execution of construction methods, but also a new perspective and methodology for vibration assessment and control. This presentation introduces the state-of-the-art in the assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of construction-induced vibration in several real construction projects in Hong Kong. The knowledge gaps, potential solutions, and necessary future research in this field are also highlighted for both academics and practitioners.
