Seismicity of the Hong Kong Region

HKIE Civil Division

Programme Highlight

Every year, about two earth tremors are felt in Hong Kong.  In order to evaluate the seismicity of Hong Kong, studies of seismic hazard in Hong Kong have been carried out by the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department.  Seismic hazard assessment is, in simple terms, an analysis of the degree of ground shaking caused by earthquakes, with due regard to their locations, magnitudes and frequencies of occurrence. Seismic hazard can be quantified by means of rigorous engineering assessment, using probabilistic calculations, to estimate the probability of earthquakes of certain magnitude or greater striking a particular location during a specific period.  This seminar presents a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment which estimates potential seismic ground motions on rock sites in Hong Kong and a pilot study of seismic microzonation assessment of the North-west New Territories.

Speakers

Ir Dr Raymond Koo obtained his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  He is a chartered geotechnical engineer and has been working for the Consultants and the Government of HKSAR over 20 years.  He has a variety of working experience in geotechnical engineering projects and particularly developed his skills in seismic engineering. He is currently a Senior Geotechnical Engineer of the Geotechnical Engineering Office.

Ir Eugene Wong obtained his bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering and law from the University of Hong Kong and master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of Cambridge. He is a chartered civil and geotechnical engineer responsible for technical development work in natural terrain hazard mitigation in the Geotechnical Engineering Office.
