Webinar on Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works Expansion – Submarine Outfall Installation by Horizontal Directional Drilling Method

Date, Time and Venue

25 May 2022 (Wednesday), 18:30 – 20:00, Seminar Via Zoom Meeting

Organized by

HKIE Civil Division

Programme Highlights

The existing Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works (STKSTW) provided a secondary level treatment to sewage collected from Sha Tau Kok town area, and commissioned in 1989 with a design capacity of 1,660m3/day at average dry weather flow (ADWF).  To cope with a forecast increase in development needs in Sha Tau Kok area, STKSTW is undergoing expansion to increase the treatment capacity from 1,660m3/day to 5,000m3/day with provisions for further increase to 10,000m3/day in future.

The treated effluent would be discharged via a new 1.8km submarine outfall from the new STKSTW after commissioning.  The outfall is constructed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method to minimize dredging and other construction activities in water.  The discharge location is selected to minimize impacts to the fishing resources, fish culture activities and other ecological resources in the marine environment.

The submarine outfall is located at approximate 100m below the seabed, and constructed by 2-way forward drilling operations at both land and sea sides.  The construction was commenced in Q3 2020 and completed in Q1 2022.  The Project Team will also present the planning works before construction, sequences of works, and challenges/difficulties encountered during the construction.
