Technical Seminar: MiC Based Unconventional Approach for Land Reclamation in Hong Kong
Date, time & venue
24-June-2020; 18:30 to 20:00 (Seminar Playback via Zoom Meeting)
HKIE Civil Division
Land reclamation over the sea in Hong Kong has been carried for many years. Various approaches and methods have been developed and adopted for better and environmental-friendly land reclamation in Hong Kong. Due to the shortage and/or increasing cost of sand fills, however, the conventional approaches have encountered challenges. In this seminar, Professor Yue will first review the past or current reclamation approaches in Hong Kong and their issues. He will then present a modular integrated construction (MiC) based unconventional approach for land reclamation and urban development over sea in Hong Kong. This MiC based approach will have no dredging, no deep cement mixing of marine muds under seawater and no filling of sands and/or public fills in seawater. He will further introduce four specific new technologies to better, cost-effectively and rapidly realize the MiC based unconventional approach in Hong Kong with controllable quality.
Free of Charge.
Ir Professor Yue is a professor in geotechnical engineering of HKU’s Department of Civil Engineering and a corporate geotechnical member of HKIE. He received his BSc and MSc education from Peking University in Beijing from 1979 to 1986, and his PhD education from Carleton University in Ottawa from 1988 to 1992. His PhD thesis was on the mechanics of soil consolidation and poroelasticity. He further worked at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa from 1992 to 1996. Subsequently, he worked on the Accelerated Landslip Preventive Measures Programme in Hong Kong for four years. He joined HKU’s Department of Civil Engineering in December 1999. He was the Assistant Director (Research) for the Jockey Club Research and Information Centre for Landslip Prevention and Land Development from 1999 to 2003. Over the past 30 years, Professor Yue has published more than 400 papers and two USA invention patents on in-situ testing techniques of soil and rock characterization. He has received some prestigious awards including (a) the excellent contributions award from the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics in 2008 and (b) the first class award of the 10th Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering in the category of Natural Science in 2019.
