Programme Highlight

The Heung Yuen Wai Highway (HYWH), a 11km dual two-lane trunk road at northeast New Territories connecting Fanling highway and Heung Yuen Wai, was open to traffic on 26 May 2019.  HYWH consists of four interchanges, two tunnels including the 4.8km Lung Shan Tunnel (the longest land-based road tunnel in Hong Kong), viaducts and at-grade roads.  It provides the residents living near Sha Tau Kok, Ta Kwu Ling and Ping Che a convenient route direct to Fanling Highway, facilitating their access to the Fanling, Sheung Shui, Tai Po and Kowloon.  This seminar will share the background and challenges of the project:


  1. Overall project background and challenges
  2. Technical challenges of the construction of Lung Shan Tunnel. The tunnel was built by two tunnelling methods concurrently, excavation by drill-and-blast method for section of sound rock and Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the other section of soft soil and complex geological ground conditions.  Innovative methods including TBM U-turn inside cavern, tunnel enlargement, etc. adopted during the construction will be discussed.

Ir Alan HO is the Senior Resident Engineer of AECOM Asia Company Limited responsible for the site supervision of the construction of Lung Shan Tunnel.
