Programme Highlight

Beiheng Expressway stretches across Beihong flyover to Neijiang Road with total span of 19.1km, undercrossing the north of Shanghai urban area. The scope of Package II built by STEC is an approximate 8km fully underground section from Luding Road to Changan Road. The main portion of this package is bored tunnel which consisting of 2 drives with length of 2.76km and 3.66km respectively. A brand new 15.56m diameter mixshield TBM from Herrenknecht is deployed for mentioned 2 drives. The bored tunnel is designed as double-layer six-lane with tunnel outer diameter of 15m, inner diameter of 13.7m and tunnel segment lining thickness of 650mm.

The whole tunnel alignment runs along densely residential and commercial corridor, the TBM mines through a number of structures including 89 nos. buildings, 3 nos. running metro tunnels (line 3, 11, 7), flood retaining walls and all kinds of utilities within its influence zone.

The key to the success of this project are accurate control of face pressure and ground settlement and the many mitigation measures were implemented. Meanwhile, in course of the TBM mining, a lot of tight curves are encountered which minimum radius is 500m only. To achieve the tight curves, special design for both TBM selection and lining structure are considered and high precisely control measures are adopted as well.

Up to now, 5.8km (90%) bored tunnel is completed. Hopefully, the TBM will break through the receiving shaft two months later. The instrumentation data reveal that structures within influence zone are disturbed very slightly, the deformation and settlement are less than specified values. The obtained lessons and experiences in this job will be good references for future similar projects.

Speakers

Dr. Xiao Xiao Chun obtained his PHD degree from Dalian University of Technology, China. He is the Chief Engineer of Shanghai Beiheng Expressway Package II. He has 16 years of tunnelling and project management experience with Tunnel Boring Machines ranging from Φ6m to Φ15m. He deeply involved projects of Shanghai metro line 4 reinstatement after big collapse, Singapore MRT circle line C855 and Marina Bay Sands IR P8402 etc. His expertise and contribution in the tunnelling industry was recognised and honoured by the Peoples Republic of China as a professional engineer. He was specially appointed to address the challenges faced by Bei Heng Expressway  Package II Project.
