Programme Highlight

MTR Shatin to Central Link (SCL) Works Contract 1128 is part of the new strategic rail corridor from Shatin to Central District. It comprises twin rail tunnels constructed by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) from Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter to Admiralty Station, under the most congested urban setting of the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, specifically the Eastern Approach Section (EAS) between Causeway Bay and Wanchai Sports Ground. The TBMs had excavated under live bridge structures (Canal Road Flyover, Hung Hing & Causeway Flyovers) without road closure.

Based on the proposed SCL alignment, the proposed tunnels either clash or affect existing these bridge structures and their foundations. In order to minimize the effect of the tunneling works, an underpinning scheme for these bridges is applied to facilitate the tunnel construction works. 3D finite element modeling was used to estimate the movement of bridge under TBM tunneling works. Based on the modeling results, temporary jacking frames with hydraulic jacking system are used to support the live bridges to keep at their original position.
