Technical visit to Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel

Date, time & venue
2011-04-16;9:00am to 12:00pm;Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel

(Jointly organized with Environmental Division of HKIE)

Programme Highlights

The project involves upgrading the flood protection standards in northern Hong Kong by

building a 11km main drainage tunnel extending from Tai Hang to Cyberport. There will

be 34 stormwater intakes and a total of about 8km of adits connecting the intakes with the drainage tunnel. The drainage tunnel will intercept stormwater collected from Mid-levels and discharge it into the sea directly, to alleviate flooding in the lower catchment of Northern Hong Kong Island. The main tunnel was constructed with two double shield

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). The adits are currently constructed by drill and blast

technique with the majority of the intake drop shafts being constructed by raise boring

method. Attendees to this technical site visit will have an opportunity to gain insights into

the ongoing construction works.
