The XRL tunnels are constructed by Tunnel Boring Machine in soft ground, drill and blast method for rock condition and open cut at the terminus and the stabling sidings.  The section of tunnel between Mai Po and Ngau Tam Mei is being built by Tunnel Boring Machine.
