India has shown growth in the recent years accompanied by rapid urbanisation. Delhi Metro, India's first modern public transportation system, commenced in 1998, consists of 190km route length, and will have 420km by 2020. All mega cities of India, namely Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad are presently building metro rail. 10 second tier cities with population of over 2million is either building or planning a metro rail.

Chennai is the fourth largest city in India, building its first metro with two corridors with a route length of 47km, of which nearly 50% is underground.  The project faces many challenges including narrow roads, traffic diversion of major arterial roads at the same time, mixed ground conditions high water table; and tunnel traversing below the river, below existing railway tracks, below occupied buildings, and crossing domestic water wells.
