“A Sense of Place - Architectural Bridges in China” was presented at HKIE Civil Division on 8 January 2008, some 10 years ago. Four architectural bridges capturing their identity in China were discussed. These bridges were not only designed  for functional use but were also designed from an architectural view so that they achieved  harmony with the surroundings.

In this seminar, we will  take the  opportunity to review the changes in bridge design in Hong Kong in the context of our “Sense of Place”. Old bridges in Hong Kong were generally designed for  practical and functional requirements, however, through the years bridge design has been evolving from pure functional requirements to include  weight on aesthetic requirement. Sometimes a masterpiece of art is achieved

Walking through the bridge design history in Hong Kong, the review will be divided into three categories, sea-crossing bridges, rural road bridges and urban road bridges.  In addition to the road bridges, some footbridges with special design features will also be introduced. These selected bridges are considered excellent projects which not only harmonize with the sense of place but also address the engineering challenges. We will have a closer look at  the most recent bridges / footbridges projects from the point of view of architecture, constructability and site constraints.

Speakers

Ir. Francis KUNG, Managing Director of Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Limited, was a past Chairman of the Civil Division.

Francis is a professional civil and structural engineer having over 30 years’ experience in planning and implementation of multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and the UK, including major highway, railway and road improvement schemes.  His portfolio includes Kwai Chung Viaduct, Eastern and Western Harbour Crossings, Hung Hom Bypass, Lai Chi Kok Viaduct, Liantang Viaducts in Hong Kong, and four iconic bridges in China. These bridges are well known in the construction industry, winning many China and International awards, including at least 3 times of the Zhan Tian You Awards.
