Ir. Programme Highlights

After the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Civil (CV) Division, a presentation on the Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (CWB) project will be given by Ir LAU. CWB is a strategic road along the north shore of Hong Kong Island targeted to alleviate the traffic congestion along the existing Gloucester Road - Harcourt Road - Connaught Road Central corridor.  Upon its commissioning, it will only take about five minutes to travel from Central to Island Eastern Corridor (IEC) at North Point.

The CWB is a mega-sized project being implemented by the Highways Department at an estimated cost of HK$36 billion.  It has commenced construction since December 2009 and is now proceeding in full swing.  The CWB project involves the construction of a 4.5 km long dual 3-lane trunk road with a 3.7 km long tunnel, linking up the Rumsey Street Flyover in Central and the IEC at North Point.  It covers a variety of works such as temporary reclamations and their removal in the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, tunnelling underneath the Cross Harbour Tunnel entrance portal, protection works to the MTRCL Tsuen Wan Line, erection of tunnel buildings, installation of various tunnel E&M systems, and modification of the existing section of IEC in North Point with live traffic.  The CWB engineering team has to overcome a lot of challenges and difficulties throughout the course of construction.

Ir K.K. LAU (Director of Highways) is going to share with HKIE members some of the main challenges and solutions associated with the temporary reclamation and construction of tunnel sections within the restricted space of Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter while maintaining its operation.
